Moissanite vs Cubic Zirconia: Why It's Not a Fair Fight

On day one, a good cubic zirconia and a moissanite both do a convincing diamond impression. The difference is what happens next. One of them still looks brilliant in five years; the other usually doesn't. Here's the honest comparison so you spend once, not twice.

Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale. Cubic zirconia is around 8 to 8.5. That sounds close, but the Mohs scale isn't linear — that gap means CZ picks up scratches and surface wear far faster, and those tiny scratches are what eventually make it look foggy.

CZ tends to cloud and dull over a few years of daily wear, as scratches accumulate and the surface degrades. Moissanite doesn't — it keeps its clarity and fire essentially indefinitely. If you're putting a stone on your hand every day, this is the difference between a keepsake and a replacement.

Moissanite's higher dispersion (0.104) gives it noticeably more rainbow flash than CZ. Both sparkle when new; moissanite simply has more to give, and keeps giving it.

Cubic zirconia is the cheaper stone up front, no argument. But moissanite sits in a sweet spot: a fraction of a diamond's price, while lasting like one. For a few dollars more than CZ, you get a stone you won't be replacing — which makes it the cheaper option over any real timeline.

There's a physical difference too. Cubic zirconia is noticeably denser than both diamond and moissanite, so a CZ stone weighs more than a moissanite of the same size. It's not something you'd notice on a finger, but it's one of the ways jewelers tell them apart — and a reminder that these are genuinely different materials, not two grades of the same thing.

If you need something ultra-cheap for a single event or a costume piece, CZ does the job for a few dollars. But for anything you'll wear regularly — an everyday ring, studs you never take out, a piece with meaning — moissanite is the honest choice: it holds its clarity and fire for life, and it still costs a fraction of a diamond. You buy it once instead of replacing a clouded CZ every couple of years.
