How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home (No Kit Required)

You don't need a ring sizer kit to get this right — just a strip of paper, a pen, and a ruler. Here's the method, a chart to read your number off, and a few tricks for measuring someone's finger without ruining the surprise.

Cut a thin strip of paper or string. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger — not too tight, not loose — and mark where it overlaps. Lay it flat against a ruler and measure the length in millimeters. That number is your finger's circumference.

Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest, and do it two or three times to be sure. If you're between sizes, round up — a hair loose beats stuck.

Match your millimeter measurement to a US ring size: 49 mm ≈ size 5, 51.5 mm ≈ size 6, 54 mm ≈ size 7, 56.5 mm ≈ size 8, 59 mm ≈ size 9, 61.5 mm ≈ size 10. If you land between two, size up.

The sneaky classics: borrow a ring she already wears on that finger and trace its inner circle, or press it into a bar of soap for an imprint. Lay a borrowed ring over the chart and match the inner diameter (about 15.7 mm ≈ size 5, 16.5 mm ≈ size 6, 17.3 mm ≈ size 7). When in doubt, ask her ring-obsessed friend — they almost always know.

And if it's slightly off, it's not the end of the world. Resizing is routine, and a ring that needs a tiny adjustment doesn't make the moment any less perfect.
